I just bought an '06 with 42k mi. On the way home, the check engine light comes on and the transmission starts slipping :frown:. It was as if it was knocked into neutral and the engine would rev but the gear wouldn't catch. Most of the time I would let off the gas and it would then shift, although it got so bad on the way back to the dealership (Carmax) that I ended up having to manually shift. Manual shifting seems to work fine. Carmax assures me that they will get it fixed properly, and I did buy the extended warranty, but this obviously has me a bit squeamish. I can walk from the deal if I want. What do you guys think, should I run? Wait to see what they have to say? No matter what, I'm probably going to take it to the LR dealership and pay to have it inspected after this.

I should also add that there was a fair amount of rust on the undercarriage, to the point that I made them pull it up on a rack for me to take a better look before I bought it. I didnt see any significant issues however. Oh and it was obvious that this truck has never seen so much as a dirt road. Definitely was a mallmobile, although it looks like its seen its fair share of salt, which wasn't washed off.

Anyone care to share their thoughts? I love the truck but definitely dont want one with any tranny issues. Thanks for any help!

Any rust should be surface. we don't have salt in the northwest (kills the salmon :) ) I do have some surface rust color but no flaking. The bodies are good for 10years at least. As for walking away, if it is under warranty then give it a chance. I have 40K on my 07 and have zero issues so far. knock on wood. See what the dealer says. you may have a new tranny in your future which is a good thing. Good luck and hopefully we can welcome a new member.

It sounds like a typical Gear linkage being rusty .There is a HOW TO fix in the WIKI area on disco.co.uk website.Simple fix and cheap.Tranny slipping out of gear is what is sounds like from your explanation, coursed by a corrosion on the gear linkage screw underneath transmission.

Thanks for the replies. Your suggestions sounds very plausible thorgal. I would definitely describe it as gear slippage. As I mentioned above there was a significant amount of rust on the undercarriage, but it looked to be surface rust only to me (untrained eye). What you're suggesting sounds simple enough, but would you be concerned about corrosion of more vital sensors, lines, etc.? Like I said above I can walk from this deal and to be honest its not like I'm getting a great deal on it anyway (right at NADA). That said, I'm definitely sold on an LR3 and want one badly. Unfortunately if I dont get this one, I might have to wait a while as there's not a lot to choose from in my area, but better than getting stuck with a potential lemon though.

Thanks again for the help!

Heck yeah I'd walk too. Unless you can get something outlandish like a 5 year drivetrain warranty on it. I'd never trust that a Carmax is going to fix it correctly.
