oil leak onto exhaust manifold

often after a highway/freeway drive i am getting a little smoke from the driver's side (US) of the engine and a smell of burning oil.

would the most likely culprit be a valve cover leak dripping onto the exhaust manifold? when i pop the hood and take a cursory look around, i can't see any leaks. i haven't really dug into yet, though.

I saw blue smoke out the drivers fender at the end of the off-ramp after driving in 4th when I first got the rig and the problem was the valve cover gasket. If you keep the R's down it leaks less.

at 162,000 miles it's probably due for new valve covers anyway. guess i'll start researching how to change those.

I took a peak at my engine and then paid someone to do it since I was in an apartment along with other things so I'm not sure of the procedure. There is a service manual available and the procedure is probably in there.

The heads look pretty big on the 5.0L and the engine bay isn't that wide. It seems tight on the drivers side and the whole rig is quite narrow and that is a massive benefit roaming through the bush in the river bottoms and surrounding areas. I'm wondering if JLR didn't put the supercharged V8 in the LR4 because of fitment issues.

Sounds like valve cover gaskets to me. They get h ard on the exhaust manifold side and start leaking onto the exhaust manifold. To replace, you need to pull fuel lines, fuel rails, injectors, coils. May as well do spark plugs since your into it that far. Replace PCV's on the passenger valve cover since its off and its easier to do it then if you havent done them yet. Your correct. I need to change mine and have all the parts for it. Only thing holding me back is the fear of breaking an injector while pulling them. If you mess it up the head has to come off… @powershift is correct too, engine bay is pretty narrow and I’m sure some of those valve cover bolts are hard to get to.

If you are looking at the block. A lot of the parts are the same. To me they are quite different one being boosted, smaller, better MPG, less power and different problems where there is a variance.

What is missed by a lot of people is that they saved a ton of money by not having to do crash testing again with the "new" V6.
