I've always been under the impression that coolant in the oil (milky oil) signified head gasket issues. I'm honestly not sure what causes gas in the oil except misfiring or running rich (leaving unburned fuel to leach into the oil), but neither of those should cause overheating.

This might be a combination of (1) old radiator (2) old thermostat (3) old coolant (4) poor ignition timing from old spark plug wires or spark plugs (5) valve issues.

Hopefully someone will be able to help.

Radiator. Either replace or get it recored. Don't know about the gas in the oil smell, though.

I would check the spark plugs for the gas in oil. Could be unburnt fuel getting past the rings. Check plugs, wires and timing. Is the car misfiring? Also, check compression in cylinders. Mine overheats too, but I know I am blowing coolant out...maybe head, maybe timing cover gasket, but I am going to do both in about 2 weeks. I have been advised to get the radiator acid washed, to remove scale, and reduce temps at the same time. Compression should show ring wear. Generally, if they are all similar then you are ok, check the spec manual for actual numbers - but without it, all within 5psi should be ok. You may find bad rings on one cylinder, hence the gas blowing by.

it could just be the thermostat sender gauge giving an inaccurate reading. i first changed the thermostat, nothing. cleaned out the radiator, nothing. looked at the thermostat sender gauge and it was pretty worn out looking. replaced it and now the temp is back to normal.

Overheating Problem: Did you check to see if your condenser fans come on 1) when you have the climate control fan on "1" or above, and the AC switch is on, and 2) when your temp gets too warm? My Disco was doing the same thing and I found out both my fan motors were burned out. Probably wouldn't hurt to follow the radiator advice as well.

95 overheating

i have a 95 disco and after anbout driving 2 miles on the beach my engine temp gauge goes up into the red zone. i stop for about 5 to 10 minutes and let it cool down with the hood open and the car on to let the coolant circulate. i was wondering why this could be happeneing and would a hood scoop do anythig to help the engine stay cooler or would the hood scoop do nothing?

Rovertax,
At your mileage you can have a couple of things going on, your radiator can be plugging up causing poor cooling, you could have air trapped in the cylinder heads from changing the coolant, pretty common, and yes you could have a head gasket, also very common for your mileage. Do you have a good mechanic who knows how to test for plugged radiators and headgasket leakage??
As for the gas smell in the oil all Rovers run rich when warming up and tend to foul the oil with raw gas. Also as your engine plugs and wires become warn they will cause this to happen also. When was the last time you had a good major tune, plugs, wires and cap and rotor? Have you ever had your engine crank case flushed out??
