Sounds like the oil pick up tube either fell off or the screen got clogged.

Don't continue to drive it until someone can look at it.

I left it in Baltimore and rented a car to get home to beat the storm.

How major is this if its just the pickup tube? NOT familiar with LR at all...

Whats the proceddure? Dropping the pan?

You have to pull the pan, checl and make sure that the pick up tube is not plugges or in spme cases it will fall into the oil pan. Check for metal in the pan, put it back together and then restart it. IF IT IS STILL THERE AND YOUR OIL LIGHT IS ON THEN YOU MAY HAVE HAD A PUMP FAILURE.
IF IT runs OK your set if not you will want a mechanci to go in further.
Good luck,

I had the exact same problem with my 97 DISCO with 63000 miles as I was driving home with my purchase. The oil light came on after about 15 minutes of highway driving. I stopped, checked the oil level which was ok and sat for an hour. Started up again and drove home. The light came back on about a half mile from my house; valve lifters were very noisy . Made it home and found this web site.

The consensus on this board was clogged strainer in the pan.

I flushed the engine, dropped the pan and found more slude than I could believe. The strainer had about a quarter inch thick glob of gunk on it.

I cleaned the pan and strainer and while I was under there I put on a new steering damper. Put on a new pan gasket, zipped it up and no more oil light.

Engine runs great, no clatter.

Well...I went to pick it up and we trailered it home with a tahoe. (450 miles or so)

Im getting the dealer to check the check engine light code for me...and thanks for the responses...i do think its the cloged screen to tube....

Question...how hard is it to pull the pan on this thing? I am somewhat mechanically inclined, But dont have a lift or anything. Is is doable, or should I just let the shop take car of it ?

Dave,
You should be able to pull the pan easily. You are going to be looking for metal bits, not good, meal shaving piles, normal but not real good and the oil pick up tube. With the tube it may be plugged or it may have come loose, I have talked to a few people who have had that happen.
Depending on how much sludge you find in the engine, and it is only the tube that needs to be cleaned, then clean everything up but it back together and run it. If it runs OK then add a quart of engine flush or ATF to the crank case and let it idle for 15 to 30 minutes, then change the oil to help clean out the rest of the engine.
Good luck and let us know how it is going.

Also, should'nt a new gasket be used when the pan is reinstalled.

The sway bar will drop or swing down after you undo the set of bolts holding the bushings on either side.
