Hi Team,
I recently purchased a 1996 Disco w/Manual transmission and 49k miles. It strated running rough and weak: while and after shifting it would hesitate and after engaging the gear it would run weak.

The mechanic changed the spark pugs, wires and fuel filter and now it enagages with good power for a while and then it gets weak again (on and off); it gets close to stalling out. While and after shifting it loses some power and on its own, it would gain normal power again.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thank you

Check the Idle Air Control Valve, a/k/a "Stepper" motor. A search will show you where it is on a 96 and what to do. Good luck and welcome here!

By the way, the error code was "randomness misfire." I'm not sure if it would narror the cause.

I'll have the mechanic check the "Stepper" motor.

Thank you again

I just saw another thread with a similar problem and a recommendation was to make sure 91 or higher Octane gas is used.

Well, being a new Disco owner, I have put at least 3 tanks of the cheap stuff (I think no higher that 87 Octane).

Do I have to pump the gas out? How do I do it? I have a quarter of a tank left.

Thank you

Drive it off, and use Seafoam or something similar to flush all the junk out of the valves.

Andy,
I will drive if off...and the mechanic now told me the couse points to the coil pack: 1 coil that fires 2 cylinders appears to be misfiring.

Have you or anybody else had this problem? I don't want to throw $ if the mechanic is headed in the wrong path.

Thanks

1 coil that fires 2 cylinders....I'm not sure that make sense. I'm going outside to shovel snow, will look at my coil pack and see if that jives. I thought that the GEMS coil pack on the 1996-1999 D1's had one coil per cylinder....hmmmm

GEMS has one coil per two cylinders.... the 94-95 has one coil... not sure on the Bosch, but I think it is one per two as well.

Joey,
I am going to switch the coil myself. Do you have some instructions for me? Is it necessary to disconnect the negative on the battery?

Thanks,
Willie

When messing with a coil on any car, always remove the negetive. You will post more often this way.... otherwise you may never post again.

Other than that.... not hard, two screws and a couple wires if I recall correctly.
