I just purchased a 1998 Discovery and the rear differential needs to be replaced. Everything runs fine, except that it makes really loud noises coming from the differential in the back. Any ideas as to how much it will cost to be replaced?

When you say "runs fine) do you mean the truck drives?

How do you know it's the diff & not a broken axle? (more likely)

If it's an entire diff ass'y, I'd budget $300-$500 assuming brakes, gaskets oil
maybe some bushings, etc.

If it's an axle, maybe $100

Oh, & that's if you do it yourself, add $500-$800 if done by shop

luck,greg

Assuming it really is the diff....
If you just want to drop in a new diff, call roverguy.com. Will is the man for used parts.
If you want to rebuild it, figure about $60 for all the bearings and shims + a few hours labor if you can't do it yourself. If it needs more than just bearings I'd get a complete unit from Will though you could still rebuild it even if it's more than just bearings.
