Smoky start after sitting for a week...

I came back from a trip and was reminded of something I found the last time I left the LR3 sitting for a week while I was away. It smoked a lot on startup! Actually continued to produce and oily smelling smoke as it idled in the driveway until I drove it.

It never does this when it sits for a night or two.

Is this something I should be concerned about while the car is still under warranty? A sign of bad seals somewhere?

Could be possible bad valve seals or worse, a ring sticking.

Yes, that needs to be addressed by the dealer before the end of your warranty. And plan on not getting the car back for 2 weeks at least. How is the idle? Open the hood at idle and see if there is any shake-put your hand on it if you can't see it. Good Luck!

Hi toddjb122.....what color was the smoke ? that can indicate where it may be from.

Black = fuel
Blue = oil
White = coolant

In any event you need to have it fixed ASAP. Best of luck and let us know how things work out.

edit if white it could also be condensation in the exaust which is normal HTH

seems white, but, smells a bit like the oily smoke i've gotten from past cars.

still, not strong, so its possible there is extra condensation from it sitting for a week. ?

To the non-mechanic, can you explain why?

If I go into my dealer and say "replace this valve" they'll look at me funny. But, if I say "I'm seeing white smoke and I think it could be the PCV valve which would cause..." I have a better chance of getting it looked into without argument.

The crankcase Pressure Control Valve (PCV) is at fault and, when the engine is running, causes oil mist to be deposited on the inside of the intake manifold. Overnight the oil runs down, from the manifold, into the cylinders and is burnt on first start up.

I'll have to check my receipts and see if its been done. I think they've been pretty good about doing any recalls/service bulletins.

I don't know what B036 is off the top of my head.
