this is very easy to do but i made it harder than i needed to by not having a hand pump and a gallon jug of gear oil. this would have made refilling the diff's a lot faster, easier, and less messy.

the front diff oil was definitely dirtier than the rear. it was greenish black while the rear diff oil was clearish brownish. the front diff also took a little more oil than the rear. almost a half pint more. yes, i was on level ground.

so, what turns the diff oil green? why does the front diff hold more oil than the rear?

First, both diffs take the same amount of gear oil, 1.8 quarts. As old as yout truck if, you should up-grade to a 75W/140 gear oil for more wear protection.
As for the color change, someone may have used the wrong oil. I would recheck whichever didn't take as much oil, just in case.
