I have a Disco II (39K miles). Drove it about a mile to an auto parts store from my house on Saturday. Came out the store after 5 minutes to find steam billowing out of the engine. I pop the hood and see water dripping down the upper left rear part of the engine where the head gasket is. I immediately freak thinking I must have blown the engine. I checked the oil it was fine and a mechanic inside the store said it looked like a water hose has been ruptured, I'm not sure if this is a correct asseement and the dealer wants $125. to diagnose the problem and $125./hour to fix it, YIKES!!!

Anyone out there suffer this kind of problem before or have a better idea as to what it might be. In addition anyone know of a good mechanic in the Coral Gables/Coconut Grove area of Miami who won't take me to the cleaners.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure of what year Disco you have, but it sounds to me like one of the two hoses that go from the intake deicer may have gone bad.

Are you talking drivers or passenger side of the engine. It could also be one of the heater hoses.

Joey,

Thank you for the prompt response. The year of the vehicle is 2003 and the water was coming from the drivers side.

Sounds like the de-icer then... check there first. It has two hoses, one from the expansion tank, and one from the top of the engine. It tends to leak a lot, but can be an easy fix.

not to throw gas on the fire, but I have a 2000 series discovery II and I had simliar issue and it was drivers side, billowing steam, etc it was head gasket. I had nothing in oil either. It was strange. Hopefully you got off easy. My mechanic did initially say it could be one of the hoses in the back of engine. its cool though, things happen. But I would go with joey's initial assesment , he's a wiz at this.
