Yeap i get that noise too on extremely cold morning, it goes away after 1-2 mins of idling. First time i heard it i was worried something had come loose in the engine so the next time around i used a stetoscope to prob several areas on the engine and the noise was not from there. I believe its the fan clutch too but unfortunately i cannot use the stetoscope anywhere close to the fan blade.

Mine had that same noise today at start-up here visiting northern Maine. The temp is -18 with a -35 wind chill. Heard some other odd noises too.

Probably one of the coldest ski days I can remember.

Did a cold startup on my 2012 yesterday morning and heard a "ping" sound coming from somewhere near the top or front of the engine, repeating at around a 1-second cadence.

It was about 15 degrees out. I let the engine idle and it gradually got quieter, then stopped when the engine warmed up.

Any guesses?

This was the morning after I realized my battery has probably given up the ghost, but it seems as if the problems are unrelated.

Had same thing on our 2015 with 22k miles. Dealer just called this afternoon and said timing chain. 22 frickin' thousand miles. you kidding me right now.

Hmmm.

Mine made the sound two days in a row, but hasn't made the sound yet again. It's been as cold or even colder several times, yet no ping on startup.

Nothing is throwing any codes, so I haven't brought it into the dealer, guessing they'd not do anything with no ping and no code.

okay, listened to those videos. Mine is tracking with the RPMs and sounds more like tappets sans oil then that engage/disengage sound of the fan clutch. So, I am inclined to believe that mine is indeed a timing chain slapping issue.

Which is interesting. If dealer confirms timing chain this would be the first V6 on the forums that has had that issue. Bad luck? No idea. Then again I have a 2010 V8 which should be a timing chain guide ticking time bomb but is silent as a tomb so who knows.

advisor told me he's done a number of them on the v6. Just talked to him today when I picked up a loaner.

Crazy. Is this the timing chain or just the tensioners? Are we back to 2010?

This ^ seems to be the fan clutch then right? and the RPM ticking that sometimes goes away on a warm engine is more the timing chain?
