@ktm525 I'm running 285s and here are my thoughts:
  • Ride Quality - I sometimes feel some of the smaller bumps on the road now. More grip when cornering. Braking slightly improved. When the tire shop had installed the tires they inflated to 44psi (above recommended pressures, I have no idea why they did this) the steering felt much more positive and lively... almost sporty. However the ride quality suffered significantly and I felt EVERY bump on the road highway. There was even some harmonic vibration coming through the steering column at times. Road noise was definitely noticeable. Dialing the psi to 2psi below the door sticker brought back that comfy LR4 ride and feel.
  • Noise Level - A little road noise coming into the cabin. Slightly noticeable but not at all annoying by any means. You have to listen for it. Radio quickly solves this issue. There is also some slight rubbing at full lock (when turned to passenger side).
  • Performance - I haven't noticed any difference in performance at all. But, I also don't push my car to the limits. Highway on ramp sprints feel just as fast as I remember.
  • MPG - About a 1-2mpg drop in the city. I haven't given it a full highway run yet. Happy to report back when I do.
I was able to fit a full size spare under truck but I did have to remove the plastic exhaust shroud and deflate the tire. I also managed to get my hitch adapter to slide into the receiver (I had to press on the tire a bit).

All in all, I'm pretty happy with the tire and am looking forward to seeing what it can do on some light off-road trails.

These look awesome. So you experience no rubbing at all with the 285's? I don't really care much about the spare. Will keep the little oem tire/wheel (at least for now).

Thanks

Whatever you do make sure your spare is the same diameter as your tires on the vehicle or it will be useless. With the AWD system I don't think it would like a mismatched tire, it could cause some expensive drive line issues. Anyone confirm that?

View attachment 7827 2013 LR4 HSE LUX, Just installed 275/55/R20 BFG KO2's, will post on any rub issues
Yes please let us know. These are suppose to rub a lot (that is what I heard) if not using rods. I just came back from Disc Tire. Right now I have 255 55 20 street tires on my LR4 2014. We tried some street tires in the 285 50 20 and they stucked the back part of the tire to the frame, when in full lock. Maybe my wheels are larger than the guys running on 285s here. Ended up ordering the nittos in 265 50 20.

Pulling the trigger soon, so torn between going 265 or 285. Fully stock LR4.

EDIT: Turns out I have 19" wheels, not 20" as I thought. No Nitto's in 19".
Anyone running stock 19's with a more aggressive tire?

EDIT PART II: ugh, looks like the only options (other than switching to different size wheels) is Copper Zeon or Wrangler Duratracs.

Being in MN, you have a perfect reason (excuse) to put true winter tires on the 19/s (plenty available and I highly recommend Nokian). If you can afford an lr4, even in used market, you can afford and justify proper 18" wheels. DO IT ;)

On Nokian I have a lot of experience with 3 different winter tires.
1st-On the Audi WRG2 (actually an "all-weather" but was incredible the first 2 winters and in some rather deep snow for a low car.
2nd-I put on my BMW awd wagon the R2 which is true winter compound and seriously fantastic in snow but also ice and through the worst, slushy dense crud on the highway at speed.
4th-on the LR3 an E load range studded Haka.. LT2. It's beyond fantastic or incredible, it's truly insane. The grip on anything is beyond my expectations. You want to go narrower for winter as it helps in several ways: increased ground pressure, easier "slicing" through the slushy dense crud and to dig down through to the most solid surface rather than having any tendency to float on top.

So, my lr3 got 17" wheels and I put on the 245/75-17. If I had to use 19's, they have some choices there too.

Good luck.

jwest - Great info! I ended up keeping the 19's and went with the GY Wrangler DuraTracs. Couldn't be happier. Much more aggressive look and the tires have handled the recent snow falls beautifully.
