0W is relatively new in terms of oils, past 10 to 15 years. the first number is for starting when cold and second number is for operating temperature. there is no doubt you cld run 0W-40 in these cars. if you lived in 130 degree climate maybe 5w 20 wld be "better" than 0w 200 but anywhere less than 90 degrees go with the 0 especially if you have winters.

5w-20 exists because people have been putting 5w in their car for 40 years and its comfortable.

manufactures widely using synthetic is a pretty recent occurrence. go back 12+ years and most manufacturers were still calling for non synthetic.

Strange that so many oil companies continue to produce and sell the always-worse 5W-20.

o_O
many companies in all industries sell all sorts of crap.

in your opinion when is 5w 20 better than 0w 20?

i use 5w-20 because i dont care enough and its easier to get. 0w 20 wld be better for my car but as i said i dont care enough as i cant measure the difference.

I've read that some car companies "require" 0W-20 because it's inherently a synthetic oil, as sort of a backhanded way to force the vehicle owners to use synthetic over dino.

for me synthetic is synthetic. i live in the northeast and my cars are parked inside every night so even when its zero out i dont have a ton of cold starts. 0w flows better at startup. is it so much better than 5w who the hell knows.

As always, I'm just happy to have a place like this where I can geek out over this crap. Nobody else I know gives a ****.
The problem with all of it is its largely immeasurable in real time.
