2011 LR4, 145K miles.

Driving home tonight I got a charging system fault error. No big deal, I was half mile from my house. Within that half mile...transmission, suspension, abs, parking brake...pretty much any fault that could come up, did.

When I got home I noticed I had no reverse or brake lights. Quickly plugged in my iid tool and pulled codes, about 20 of them. The first timestamped error is
P0562-00 (2f) system voltage low
Followed by
P065B-16 (2f) generator control circuit performance circuit voltage below threshold

Alot of other circuit and low voltage codes as well. I can share other codes if needed

10 seconds later dash flickers and then shuts off, blower motor fades off/on, headlights shut off. Pretty much anything electrical was struggling to stay on.

I shut the car off and it won't restart. It wants to crank, but can't. Symptomatic of a dead battery.

Can anyone confirm this is an alternator issue?
I assume so because of the state of charge and 8v voltage. This screenshot was taken BEFORE the car was shut off.

Sure sounds like it.

Have you visually inspected the alternator and battery? I forget from where, but can’t our LR4’s drip oil right into the alternator, killing it?

Kind of, for 2 minutes. It was 12:30 am and 25 degrees. Ill look again today, try to jump it and check voltages with a multimeter. Hopping I can get it started to get into the garage.

Alternator is arrive Monday or Tuesday ordered with wishful thinking that the fix will be just to change it, but don't want to do it in the street.

And yes,I had an oil filter housing leak that did just that, about 7 months ago. Cleaned it all up and it was good since. Maybe it was just enough damage to shorten its life 'till now.

Jumped the car.

Instantly get charging system errors. Within 30 seconds I end up with similar random system errors as the first post, and the dash shuts off.

Battery wiring is snug and doesn't look like any visible shorts.

While running I'm getting about 8v from the battery.

For the $350 cost of a new alternator, I'm just going to install one and hope that solves it. Even if it doesn't, its the original 10yr old alternator, ill consider it preventative maitnance.

I'll update on Monday or Tuesday, after the part arrives, with the results.

Amazing how these cars completely s**t themselves when the battery/charging system fails. Hope the alternator fixes it - sounds like it will.

Regarding leaks that can hit the alternator, I recall a couple of postings that mentioned passenger side valve cover leaks getting to the alternator. I seem to recall at least one of those posts mentioning that it caused the alternator to fail as well.

I take it you made it home okay. Did it go into restricted performance? Just curious - I’ve yet to experience a bad alternator/battery in this car.

Yes,, luckily I was soo close to home.

And yes, restricted performance was one of the messages. It was shifting terrible and riding out gears, so I'm not sure if performance was actually restricted though. I drove slow and easy since it wasn't driving correct.

My alternator went out two weeks ago, similar story. Got the charging error and then about 30 min later it went crazy with faults and then died. Had to jump it to
Get it on the trailer.

DirtyHal and DaytonaRS7 - I had the EXACT same issue. I had brought my 2010 LR4 to have a some work done (radiator, water pump, timing cover gasket, etc.. (nothing electrical related). 2 weeks later i was driving and got a charging system fault error - then 2 miles later i got all those same fault codes and the dash shut down. The difference is I restarted and all is fine. This was 2 weeks ago and all has been fine. Can you share what caused this and what is the fix? I sense it will do it again and have to tow it like you did.

Im assuming its my alternator. currently waiting on a new one to be delivered (delayed until Friday)
i had an oil leak months ago that dripped on the alternator, combine that with 145k on the clock, i wouldn't be surprised if its time had come.

i will add though, the regulator wire harness plug was detached form the wire when I removed the alternator. I repaired the wire harness.
Did it break when i was removing the alternator?
or
was it broken and that is what caused the issue?
Ill never know.
