Hi All,

Looking for thoughts on a coolant temp issue. 2015 SCV6 with 109k miles is taking forever to warm up. Took 20 minutes for it to reach 200 this morning in 38F weather. I originally assumed the thermostat was stuck open, but when I hooked up the gap tool I noticed the temp sensor 2 was pretty much matching ambient temps. Here is a screenshot from gap tool after 45 minutes of highway driving.

So my question is how much does the temp sensor 2 influence the thermostat?

Couldn't you get this behavior if the thermostat was stuck partiality open? I bet it's the thermostat still.

It certainly acts like it is stuck partially open. Good call. Not sure why the temp sensor 2 isn't showing anything but ambient air temp or if that influences the thermostat operation at all.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the thermostat is only influence by the coolant temp, nothing else.
The top radiator hose on my 2015 LR4 takes about 20 minutes to get very hot, indicating an open thermostat.

Believe your thermostat is closed in this photo. the second temp sensor 2 is the cooling loop going through the radiator. this would mean that your thermostat is closed so the loop is continuously cycled through the block to heat the coolant. i assume your probably running the heater in this as well so there is probably being heat dissipated through the heater core allowing the engine to stay cool enough to not open the thermostat hence the huge difference in each cooling loop.

Some thermostats have a heating element, which can control the thermostat.

did you ever figure this out? I’ve got a 2017 Discovery with the SCV6 that I just replaced an injector on. While test driving it I was running temps and started to notice that the coolant temp climbs to pretty high temperatures. Was climbing up a hill for a couple of minutes and the temp touched 221 in 67°F temps. It dropped back down to 216 before the top of the hill while still pushing but that temp still seems high. My LR4 always always stays around 190-195 in these temps and never above 210 in very hot temperatures. My question, is this normal for the SCV6? Wondering if I have a thermostat issue.

^ Correct.
On the V6: The thermostat begins to open at 208-215 °F and is fully open at 226 °F.
The V8: The thermostat begins to open at 190 - 194 °F and is fully open at 216 °F.
Good to know, thank you @Rover Range . I’m guessing it runs higher temps because of the colder intercooled air? Does the SCV8 run this way as well?
