I've had some time lately to work on getting my Rover back to tip top shape and one part that has always annoyed me is the badly faded lower windshield cowl. Does anyone have a detailed procedure on how to replace the cowl? I'm curious to know how hard/easily the wiper blade assemblies come off and if adhesives are needed when installing the new one. An overall instruction would be great.

This is the part I'm referring too.

Here's a "how to" article I wrote a while back with pictures. Be careful when you "tap" anything with a hammer or anything else, or you could break something. If you have never changed the left and right pillar covers, you should replace them as well.

The issue of concern with the cowl, is the fact they warp within a year, and leak water into the cabin air intake. That in turn can do worse damage to electronics.

I used a standard wiper removal tool and painted mine with rubber bedliner spray. Laid down pretty good after the paint job and held up for the past 4 years or so like that. I just taped off the top rubber portion and have yet to have any issues.

I replaced mine 2 weeks ago and it was easier and quicker than I thought. On my wipers, I didn't even have to use a removal tool. After removing the bolts, I just pulled up on them while slightly moving them back and forth and they came off.

On mine, just replacing that faded piece was a huge improvement in the looks department. Mine was warped as well.

tlt - why do you recommend replacing the pillar covers as well?

The original ones had problems with leaking, and blowing off when going down the road because the plastics break. You will have to remove them to put on the cowl, if they are not broken yet, they could well be when you are done.

The last new one I bought, was much more rugged feeling, and they also improved the mounting hardware... seals and such.

Replacing the a-pillars is not always needed, but if nothing else, get a new hardware kit for the clips, and perform the bulletin to eliminate water leaks from them while they're off.

Thanks for the tip, however most folks don't know what "the bulletin" is, nor do that have it.

Maybe you can post or link to it.
