I hear this is good for the Discovery 2 due to the design of the engine. Is this true for LR4?
Something to do with the how the lifters work.

That's good to know. My old girl does have a little ticking when it first starts up.

There's an oil-change thread that delves into oils ad nauseum. Bottom line is I would not stray from 5w-20. New Land Rover recommendation is 0w-20, but common belief is that's an attempt to eek a tiny fraction of some additional MPG out of the engines. 5w-20 is best.

Thanks again for the many ideas and thoughts about oil for the Land Rover engines. Changed the oil/filter last week using 5w20 Castrol from Walmart.

Eh I dunno, I think the 0 may help with cold start oiling. Once it comes up to temp it acts as a 20.

I am feeling this

Everything Ryan said above is 110% correct. ^^^

Think I've mentioned this in other threads, but unless you routinely have to shoo penguins or polar bears away from the truck when parked outside, there is absolutely no need to use 0W-20 and almost zero difference in cold flow, vs 5W-20 (assuming both are full synthetics, because nobody would use cheap oil in a $10k engine, right?).

With either 0W-20 or 5W-20 the more important thing is to change it by 5-7kmi with standard service (more often with severe service). Ignore the 15kmi number in the manual.
