It's getting spicy on these posting boards. Better grab me some popcorn! ;)
Religion, politics… and vehicles… a catalyst for entertainment from the sidelines.

I’m only at 160,000 kms. And this 3.0 Supercharged keeps up quite nicely. I don’t seem to have all the issues that others complain about…. oh yeah, “preventative” maintenance. ;)

Looking back at my standard of living and my lifestyle, I realize I've always been a "duct tape and baling wire" kind of guy. No choice. Had to make ends meet by whatever means necessary. That develops a low-level resourcefulness of sorts, but there are some things that only a little cash can fix.

Now I may be coming into "a little cash" in the not too distant future, but not enough to fundamentally upgrade my standard of living and lifestyle. If so, I would have the means to let the pros do the major preventative maintenance, but then I would be heavily upside down on a 13-year-old luxury, off-road, SUV. Get rear ended by some kid gazing at his cell phone at high speed and that investment is gone in an instant. That's not something I can control or protect myself against.

Given all that, I'm thinking maybe I need to pick up a set of tools and learn to use them. Might be the only way Land Rover ownership makes any sense for a guy like me.

There's also a lot of satisfaction to be had in knowing how things work, and that you can indeed be competent at doing the maintenance. The caveat is it's useful to have a backup in case your repair takes longer than anticipated because you're learning.

I hear you @ftillier I'm big into personal satisfaction that comes with developed and demonstrated competence. I'm also onboard with the backup plan. Probably get me an old beat up minivan to drive around and if the wheels come off have it towed to the junkyard.

A lot depends on how deep I want to get into it. This all started because I got rear ended a year ago and my 2013 Pathfinder got totaled. Looked for a comparable 4-wheel drive and stumbled across the LR4. Now I'm contemplating learning to turn wrenches to keep it. That's a long way from my point of departure.

@powershift I wouldn't mind owning one of those in the future once the trustifarians get bored and dump theirs for some new shiny thing. At that point, its value as a status symbol will have depreciated to zero and you can negotiate purchase price based upon its actual intrinsic worth.

If you can, absolute best value out there IF you go private party and can confirm timing chain done on the V8. Most of the other repair items are fairly simple, so far as these things go. Whatever tools you buy, they're probably paid for and then some on the first modestly time- consuming repair.

I'd love to see the maintenance bill over its lifetime.
After I purchased my 2011 LR4 at auction(192,000 miles) I was able to find out that it was a one owner vehicle and the guy did maintenance on it! He had spend just over $21,000 at JLR dealerships for service. There were other records of things done at independent shops but I could not access those records for dollar totals. I am now another $5000 into parts and I have a beatiful LR4 HSE LUX. I knew what I was buying as far as work needed. This thing should be ready to rock another 200K miles!

Hard to know if fuel dilution balances out oil consumption. ;)
