having problems with my 2000...sometimes it runs fine, but when you accelerate you can hear water rushing in the heater core, and other times she overheats.....when she overheats, the return line from the core is cool, and the lower radiator hose is cool....is there any way to bypass the thermostat until i can get a new one, and is it likely to be the problem....thanks

If you hear water you are low on anti-freeze and probably have an air pocket in the system.

And with an air pocket, chances are you may have a coolant leak, make sure by having someone pressure test the coolant system. Also, do you know how to bleed the coolant system?

T-stat auto bypass's if needed, very odd design. so no intervention required.

Bleeding the air isn't that hard.

My method:

Park with front end of Rover up a slight hill or a set of car ramps

Fill the overflow tank with antifreeze (best to use premixed unless you want to buy distilled water and guesstimate how much you will need to mix)

Start the engine with heater on

Let it warm up, then shut the engine down and fill overflow tank again, repeat until you no longer have to fill the tank.
