So this has happened a few times, but this morning was the worst.

This is my wife's car, 2012 LR4 5.0 we have owned it for about 3 years. It started about a year ago but has occurred now maybe four times. We installed a newer Interstate battery from LR about a year ago, I've checked the battery voltages and they are right on the money, I'll post numbers later. I've checked all the battery connections that I can think of to make sure they are tight.

It has been super dry here in Atlanta, FYI.

It usually just occurs at random; while driving, at a red light, etc. But this morning was the first time it has occurred while starting the car.

The tire pressure, temp gauge, AC are the first things to go out. Then the AC will stop flowing air, aka the blower, and then the entire dash goes out. The car still seems to drive normally, and no dimming of the headlights have been noticed. And then within 10-30 seconds, everything just restarts as normal.

This morning:

The rest are from the last few months.

at a red light, and AC is off, during the daytime

The dash, completely blacked out.

TPMS light on, stereo and HVAC off.

I do own the Gap-II tool, but I'm very new at using it. The wife is currently at work with the car. About a month ago we took the car to the dealer, and they were unable to find any issue or replicate the issue. It will likely go back in the morning, as the wife is starting to feel uncomfortable driving it.

Any thoughts?, anything I can scan with GAP?

Thanks,
Nathan

If you have a new battery, then maybe the alternator is failing. Is the passenger side valve cover leaking oil and dripping into the alternator?

I did a little digging through the service manual, and the common component in all your issues appears to be the Central Junction Box (CJB). As avslash recommended, I’d look for a bad ground, or corroded connection inside your CJB.

Also, when you replaced your battery, did you happen to change the size? When you replaced it, did you reset the computer charge values? This could all be happening because the ECU is commanding the highest level of charge for the battery which is pushing 14-15V to the electrical system because it still thinks your battery is unable to hold a charge. 15V over a long period of time can start to damage your electrical components...the first in line would be the CJB as that’s where the power goes first.

Since you’ve got the gap tool, check to make sure the battery definition in the CCF matches the rated capacities on the battery you have installed. It could be someone swapped an H8 in place of an H7 a while ago, but never updated it. (Or vice verse). Then I’d do an ECU compensation value reset for the entire system....or at least reset the battery compensation. Just to make sure everything starts at a common baseline, then continue to troubleshoot from there.

Oh boy, soooo that is a long winded somewhat answer that I don’t have an answer for ( I know but let me explain). But it’s fix! I’ll type a longer answer tomorrow, but in short, it spend over a month at the dealer where they went thru the entire middle speed cambus system looking for the source of the ground. We never found the exact issue. But after reinforcing any possible grounding sites it hasn’t happened again. Knock on a rainforest of wood.
