$78,000 van!? Is this a joke?

it is a joke. I think they must have some kids doing their design or something without much user feedback or focus groups. Defender is a more egregious fail IMHO as they had a blue print. Instead they made it look like a chinese knockoff.

I am half surprised they didn't name is a Defendur or some other variant.

Commercial versions of SUVs are quite common on Europe, even loaded to the gills with luxury features, since pickup trucks basically don't exist and are considered an American aberration...

There are substantial tax benefits for company owners over there to purchase this vehicle instead of the "SUV" version, think of our Section 179 deduction except that over there, to be classified as "commercial", the SUV must permanently lose the rear seats and have a full cargo cage behind the front seats. There was a commercial Discovery 4 (LR4) sold as well. Quite a few owners in the UK are anxiously waiting for Land Rover to release the commercial version of the Defender 90, which is coming. LR already released photos and videos and it actually looks pretty cool and way better than this Disco (having 2 doors only helps), but of course we won't ever see that version here in NA.

I feel ignorant since I've never noticed nor considered this a reality in Europe but...holy hell, what? This must be what it's like for Europeans when they hear we don't use the metric system.

Good news for anyone worried about aftermarket support, as Lucky8 and others are feverishly working on off-roading bits to improve the new Defender. Check out these beauties - hefty looking rock sliders with nerf bars and "my" PD1880 18" Compomotive wheels with 33" tires fitted on a P400 Defender engine, apparently with the use of spacers and no other mods necessary.

A steel front bumper with winch tray (the "official accessory" front winch alone from Land Rover costs nearly 7Ks installed by the time it's all said and done, nuts!!) and some undershields, and I'll be a happy man.

Don't let the Euro fan boys fool you. The majority of Europeans (and I'll include UK here) that I run into in Western Canada would give their left nut for a big ol 'merican Truck with a large displacement V8. Taxes, lack of space for the average citizen, and an ever increasing socialist environment precludes then to dinky little Euro mobiles and row housing lol. I will acknowledge my sample is biased as these are tourists or people fleeing the old country to live in the comparatively wide open spaces to ride, ski, sled and generally live with some elbow room in the great outdoors.

The D5 is a disaster on all fronts.

are you sure that's a good idea with that monocoque? hate to see someone stuck and pull the subframe right off...

With that unibody, you might be better to spend the money on a AAA membership or something.

The Bronco is more of a Wrangler competitor. 3500 lb towing, no third row. It doesn't come close to meeting my needs

Totally agree. It's time for a separate New Defender forum where those of us that like and/or ordered one can move on. D5 owners have their own forum where they can discuss the D5 without abuse from LR4 members. New Defender owners will need the same.

"Third row?" Let's get real here. I think your cognitive dissonance is getting in the way of your objectivity. There is no spoon...
