Makes me think that something went wrong during the timing chain job.

That is my year. I would be asking the shop that did your chain questions and check the warranty because that shouldn't happen. Maybe they overtorqued the mounting bolt and that weakened the camshaft where the bolt goes through the cam-to-actuator mounting point. Thats what the evidence shows because the cam breaks are right there where the fastener is.

After I had my work done I flogged it all over really hard, high RPM's. Then I found it would go into reduced power mode at WOT 4th manual mode. You had to make the engine work hard and stand on it WOT so you can hear the tuned visceral growl from the 5.0L V8 engine on the freeway as it punches a hole in the air and the problem was a camshaft actuator control failure. There is one on each head that controls oil flow to the actuators and a cam sensor error was triggered.

For my LR4 its worth replacing the engine. The LR4 is not worth the cost of a reman 5.0L V8 engine on paper as someone else eluded to, but I'm not looking at it that way. I was ready to put in a reman when I first got mine 7/23 but didn't need to.

i did the timing chain myself.
i used the proper torques specs. the torques spec was like 30 NM or so. so not that wild

my car has a flooded title due to a leaking windshield. not worth the investment, so I'm on the market for a different LR4

I searched a while for mine, 3 months daily all day while I had a remote job. Lots of Range Rovers and RRS in Vegas. So many beautiful Range Rovers in top looking condition with the SC V8, but LR4s are harder here. Ended up buying from California. Are you getting the V8 again or the V6? The V8 is such a joy. The Defender V8 is pretty bad ass, but it doesn't have a tailgate, a hatch for shade (gotta have that in the deserts) and not really an overlander like an LR4 although I'm sure it would work just fine with 500 HP.

i have found 2016 LR4 Landmark addition in pretty good condition. Southern car with no rust. having a PPI on Wednesday. if everything goes well, I'll have a new rig pretty soon.

Haha, didn't realize it went 40k miles! Good luck on the 2016!

I honestly wouldn't know what to do if my engine grenades itself in the future... Probably be irrational and buy another LR4.

I thought about other options like Chevy Tahoe or Sequoia. but I would have to double the budget for the car, which is not that enjoyable to drive.
So I decided to give LR another chance
