HI all,
I am a long time rover owner 1st time poster on this site. I have an 04 Discovery II. This summer my wife was driving it (I wasnt there so I can take no blame), it overheated and shut down.

Here is what I know: Expansion tank failed, water evacuated, it was driven for about 5min after the light went on. (bad spot of freeway with no shoulder). She had it towed to our local LR mechanic. He found water in Cyl 1 and 60lbs compression in 2. Crank case oil is clean/no water and is at the same level it was at prior to O/H. Motor cranks but does not start.

My question is this: Head gasket or block/sleeve issue? I used to rebuild jeeps so I understand motors but I am now disabled so I cannot do the work myself and I hate to put my trust and money into someone without all the information possible. Since I know there are a lot of knowledgeable folks on this site I thought I would solicit an answer.

Thanks.

I had a similar experience with my 1999 range rover 4.0, turned out the sleeve had a hairline crack in it, common to this motor family. Rover said they could not re-sleeve the motor, but could replace it for $9,500!! My engine shop did it for about $1,200 for a complete short block with new sleeves.

Why are you guessing about it, this won't help in the final out come.
5 minutes of driving the truck with the light on is real bad, odds are not good for the engine and you won't know till you tear the engine down. If you have any questions, send me your number and I'll try and help you.
