we are going on a road trip. Since I did not want to spend a thousand dollars on roof rails and cross bars for my lr4. I bought a welding machine and built a hitch carrier for my Thule box I already had. I think it will work out great.

I'm going to ask the million dollar question: how far does it stick out on the sides?

Wondering the same thing. It has to be somewhat illegal or too wide for a lot of lanes... Cool creation though.

Bet if you put a sticker on it that said "Acme Funeral Services" people would back the hell off your bumper.

I admire your fabrication skills but this is a much better solution...
I've had it for several years, works great.

It's called a stowaway2, I bought mine from these guys. So much better than rooftop cargo boxes from yakima or thule, which I used for many years until I got tired of needing a step ladder to access my stuff. Now my wife and kids can load and unload it. I've had mine for 8 years, it's served me well on many family trips using multiple vehicles.

I agree but I already had the thule box left over from another vehicle. since my lr4 did not have roof rails. I wanted to put in on the hitch. I got a welder out of it and my mpg was not affected.

here is a pic of the box on clearance from side mirror.
