For my '98 Ranger HSE. I bought the truck 6 months ago and thought the fob battery was dead, but it's broke. The dealer wants $140 to check the system and the almost $200 for the remote. Is there anything cheaper out there?

Helps some...

My fob is actually broken. The connection to the battery is no longer attached to actual mechanism. I guess I can try and take it apart and re-sodder it. I still don't know if the system within the vehicle works. I don't mind paying for a new fob but the dealer won't refund the money if the system broken. I have someone who will replace it for $250 (aftermarket), but that's just to lock/unlock. Which is fine, I don't keep anything valuable in it, and am not particularly worried about someone stealing my 12 year old Rover.
Thanks.

Re-Solder the part that is broken. Do not go aftermarket!

Is there a problem...

with after-market, or is keeping the vehicle "original" the reason? Soldering is not my forte, I may try it and see what happens.

Aftermarket alarm or locking add ons will cause issues down the road when things have problems, it is almost impossible to tell if the aftermarket item is causing the issue or what LR part has gone bad. I can't tell you how many times I have seen aftermarket alarms or remote starters on Rovers cause no start issues.

Aftermarket would be a last resort, believe me, I know these trucks are sensitive. I wouldn't consider a remote start. But the dealership wants $140 just to check the system to see if it works, if there were a way to test it without that cost it would be great! I bought mine 6 months ago and have already put $4,000 into gaskets, brakes, shocks, heater core etc. Any other truck I would have cut my losses a while ago.
