I have a 98 discovery with electronic ignition, I recently had the transmission rebuilt, and installed it myself. Now I have an ignition problem. The car starts and idles fine and runs well to about 1800rpm, above that it begins to break down and starts backfiring through the intake throat ( air cleaner ). Any ideas? All cylinders are firing at the spark plugs, but without a distributor, I don't know how to advance or ****** the timing.:argh::mad:

The ECU does all the advancing of timing...

How many miles are on the disco and what other maintenance has been performed.

Type of spark plugs and wires currently used.

There is a switch on the D1 tranny called XYZ, or something similar, that when damaged or destroyed will cause this problem.

It has 163,000 miles and has a 4.0L. The wires are STI, and the plugs are Bosch. Not sure of the entire history of the maint. but the engine compartment is clean and the vehicle seems to have had at least the minimum maint. As far as I know, the vehicle was running ok before I pulled the tranny. I refer to the last person to touch it rule. Could there be any other reason related to the tranny remove and replace that I am not aware of that would effect the vehicle? Or is it just a coincidence?

Is this switch located on the drivers side toward the rear of the Tranny? ( 2 prongs)
