Did you use a GAP tool to watch trans temps? I still have this on my to-do list soon, but dont have a GAP tool.

I used both the GAP tool and also confirmed it with an IR thermometer. The bottom of the pan temperature matched the GAP tool temperature.

As an update, I have not done a long drive yet, but after a 10 mile drive still no leaks.

Just a minor update to fully close the loop, I am calling time of death on any possibility of leaks. The LR4 has not had some 100 mile drive, but it has had several drives where it certainly got to temperature on hot days and no leaks. Kudos to that Lubelocker gasket. I strongly recommend that folks don't skimp on that. Thanks to everyone who helped with advice and who contributed to this thread.

Also, I'll probably have to do the same job for my BMW (ZF 8-speed) in a couple of years and the job is similar (but easy access), so this was good practice.

My trans is starting to shudder a little bit again. I guess lubeguard will only get you so far, but as a temp work around, it definitely helped. I ordered the lubelocker gasket and will be ordering the pan/fluid kit and an IR thermometer here soon to do this. Not looking foward to it, but has to be done.
