New car first oil change

Varying opinions on this too.

On LR3 I remember doing the first change at 1200 miles. Not a big fan of the theory of 15000 miles oil change (especially the first oil change after that many miles). My reasoning is just plain good ol laws of physics, friction, metal fragments, etc etc. I understand that modern engines are much more refined when it comes to initial wear and tear, but there is gotta be some frictional breakage there.

Biggest concern should be the brand/quality of oil and the oil filter. Not sure on your engine, but many oil filter companies offer 2 size filter for many of the Rovers, check out the Mobil 1 as being one to consider.

My first was at 3000 miles, and later every 5000-7500....
That Jaguar 5.0L V8 need that special Castrol oil, and seems only dealer has it...

We change the oil and rotate the tires every 5000 miles going 7500+ miles will certainly get the car through the powertrain warranty period, but I sure wouldn't want to own the car 7+ years down the road if the oil had only been changed every 15000 miles

Read some where that the new cars now come with a special formulation oil from the factory for the initial break-in period and therefore it may not be good idea to change it immediately after 500 or 1200 miles or so.

No, that was a common practice back in the 60's more so then now.
