Ok Help Broke Down In Fl

OK I have a 91 D1 with 176k on it. Here is the problem I was driving home last night go home everything was fine. Parked and went to move it about 2 hrs later it sputtered a little then wouldn't crank. I waited a few Hrs tried again. Still no lick went out this mronign took off the battery cable for about 15 min replaced no luck. It turns over fine strong battery starter working fine. Just doesnt seem like its getting fuel. Fuel filter maybe??? Any ideas would be grfeat I also think i need a new vss could this cause a non crankning problem???

VSS would not cause the issue you are having... this sounds more like a fuel pump, the fuel pump relay or similar. Check to see if you can hear any sounds in the cargo area when the key is first turned on. no sounds mean the pump is not trying, you can also check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail on the schrader valve.

If nothing, check for voltage at the fuel pump. (remove the carpet in the cargo area and then remove the little cover, you will see the wires, check for voltage as soon at the key is turned. No voltage, possible bad relay, voltage and no fuel, bad fuel pump.

On my 99 there is a fuel cutoff switch that is supposed to stop the fuel in case of an accident. Mine is I think near the firewall on the passenger side. If the older models have the same switch/button you might at least try and see if it needs resetting.

Ok I disconnected the fuel filter because i have a new one to go on it. Man that was a royal bit** and it's still not off. but i got the end off near the tank turned the truck on no petrol turned it over a few times still no petrol.So I think it safe to assume its the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay.I want to think its the relay because i had no warning it was going to go out no previous sputtering or anything. Any opnions or comments?? Is there something i am missing?

Could go either way, most fuel pumps don't give a warning when they die.... they just quit.

Check for voltage at the pump when the key is turned on, that should let you know whether or not it is the pump or something else...

Thanks Joey your the man. You siad i can get to it from the back under the carpet. i was gonna pull the carpet tonight you also said there were 2 wires are they color coded. Also is there an easy way to get off the fuel filter other than being kin to super man...lol

Also do you know if you can buy the relay at a normal auto parts store????

You stated that this is a '91 Disco? In the older disco's the relays are behind the passenger kick panel, in '96 and newer, they are under the hoold... You would have to pull in and check with a local dealer, not sure if they can supply one or not.


Relay modules
The two multiport fuel injection relays are located in the RH footwell area behind the ’A’ post panel. The main relay module is energized via the ECM when the ignition is switched on and supplies current to the multiport fuel injection system. The fuel pump relay module is energized by the ECM which in turn operates the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system.

Ignition on
When the ignition is switched on, voltage is applied to ECM pin 11. The ECM then switches on the main relay by supplying an earth path at pin 4. This allows battery voltage to pass to ECM pin 28, to the four injectors and through the ignition coil to ECM pin 25. In addition, the fuel pump relay is switched on by the ECM supplying an earth path on pin 20. Voltage is
applied through the inertia switch to the fuel pump. The pump runs for a short period to pressurise the fuel rail. The fuel pressure regulator will open at its maximum setting and excess fuel is spill returned to the tank.
The ECM determines the amount of stepper motor movement from the following signals:
• Engine coolant temperature data at pin 33.
• Inlet air temperature data at pin 16.
• Throttle potentiometer data at pin 8.
• Engine speed data at pins 31 and 32.
• Manifold absolute pressure data (via pipe from
manifold).
• Battery voltage at pin 28.
• Ignition signal at pin 11.
If one or more of the following inputs fail, the ECM will substitute the back-up values shown to maintain driveability.
Input Back-up value
Coolant temperature Idle Speed controlled until engine is fully warm. 60°C at
speeds above idle. Inlet air temperature Derived from engine speed and
engine load. Manifold absolute Derived from engine speed and
pressure throttle position.

Just looked at the doc and read the article man .All i gotta say is how long you havd a rover??? they must have uploaded all that into you like th matrix...lol... Thanks well at least somthing good has come out of this I now know I don't have to take the fuel tank off to swap the fuel pump. Hey part my not be cheap be at leat these thing are realitily easy to work on. Kinda like the jeep cj7 i use to have but on steroids...lol.. Thanks again joey you are the man.
