overhead map-light panel

so I was trying to change a map-light in the overhead panel by the wing mirror ... and as I pushed the new bulb into the socket, something broke and the bulb went into the hole and behind the mirrored backplate ...

Q: How do I get this backplate off? is there a trick to it?

Not sure I understand your question exactly, but if you are attempting to remove the overhead console (the one in front of the rear view mirror with map lights and sunroof switch), it is easy: just grab the front edge of that panel with the tip of your fingers and pull it straight down, it will open up like a book without much effort.
