Just popped in an LED in the rear cargo area light, I appreciate the improvement but think it'd be even better to also use the two third-row map lights as cargo lights as well.

I shouldn't hurt anything if I were to tap the positive from the rear-most cargo light and fish it under the headliner to each of those map lights, right ? That way they'll turn on /off with the cargo light automatically...

I don't know. There are so many computers in this thing that for all I know disconnecting the positive leads from the map lights would trigger a "bulb out" alarm. But that's an easy experiment to do just by pulling the bulbs out.

I ended up wiring in some LED tape to the rear cargo light along the back headliner. Works very well, and is reversible.

Along these same lines, I have thought about installing some good aftermarket lights in the cargo area, most likely putting them inside the trim on the inside of the liftgate. But then lately I've been buying magnetic flashlights that I just turn on and stick somewhere appropriate when needed.

Gotcha. My concern was more if I'm feeding +12 back into the output of the BCM (I'm assuming BCM is controlling lights). Didn't think of LED tape, that might be the way to go.
