I have a 1997 disco 1 which had a coolant leak in a hose so I took it to my local rover dealership to have it replaced. They also told me that i should replace the water pump and the viscous unit for the fan which I agreed to. $700 later it still overheats. The origional cause of the overheating was obviously a lack of coolant now what is wrong. I have never had a problem with overheating even with the A/C on full blast, now even with the heater on full blast I cant go more than 2-3 miles before I have to pull over. There are only three things that I can think of that could be causing this problem.
1. Bad water pump
2. Bad thermostat
3. Air in the system which might not let the water pump work properly

If anybody has any other good ideas on what it might be or ways to diagnose let me know. I am taking it in first thing tomorrow morning to let them have if. They refuse to do anything for me I will start playing with things myself. I have had just about enough of them anyways.

sounds like bad Thermostat. that is where I would start. Also how hot did it get the first time it overheated? If real bad, then you may have more issues. Block, Head, head gasket.... all or either/or could be cracked......

Lets hope for the Thermostat

Could be a by-pass hose leaking - had a similar problem. When the engine heats up, air is let into the system and the car can overheat.

I had the same issue on my 97 D1. Turned out to be my fan clutch. A good way (or bad way to some) to test if your fan clutch is giving out is to turn your motor on, hood open, and attempt to stop your fan blades. This can be done with your hands (gloves on) or with a plastic bottle. If you can stop the fan blades, your fan clutch is warn and needs replacing.
