So the upper portion of my rear hatch (the glass window & plastic surround) likes to squeak. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes not at all. I thought it might simply be the rubber gasket rubbing on the plastic surrounding bits, but a coating of Slipstick (which used to cure a similar noise in my Audi) didn't do the trick.

Is there something else I should check for? Is there another lube product that has worked for you? Any bits around the rear window that loosen over time and might give rise to this type of noise and I might be able to tighten? I rode around in the jump seats yesterday and couldn't come up with a better diagnosis...

Thanks!

Mine did that. It was under warranty, I mentioned it, and I think they tightened the latch.

It was starting to creak like an old stationwagon we'd ride around in as a kid...not a 50K land rover, so I was kind of annoyed but it was easily fixed. Sorry, don't know for certain what they did.

Something to check is the ball mounts for the upper gate struts. They just thread into the upper part of the quarter panel. If they are loose, they can generate a noise. If they are loose and you remove the strut, get a helper and do one side at a time, and use loctite to prevent in the future.

Adjusted and lubricated striker, is all my tech wrote on the repair order for upper hatch noise. Of course, it once in a while takes an extra attempt to fully close but it might also have done that before. -- oops, not entirely true, closes fine unless bonehead me does not wait long enough for the lock to reset after touching the opener switch.

Had the same noise in the back and this is what I discoverd right before taking it in for warranty...

If you check on the back with the rear window portion open on the sides about half way down you will find a couple of spring mounted plastic or rubber stoppers. They are spring loaded and move with the glass portion of the door when closed. I found out the hard way that lubricating these things would cause a great amount of sqeaks. Since then I regularly clean them and use a degreaser on a cloth to get any stuff off the plastic part. Also don't use Armor All on them or any rubber or vinyl protector it will just make things worse. Hope it helps!!

Actually, after trying a few different things, the only thing that silenced the squeak was to do the exact opposite of your solution - I greased (bicycle hub grease) the striker portion mounted on the truck AND the spring-loaded bits on the hatch. Squeak gone. Much relief and rejoicing.
