Actually you may need strap wrench :) Helps a lot to deal with front shocks.

I use one from folkz who makes wise-grip - that thing is awesome for lots of uses.

Do you have to compress the front shock springs or is that just for smaller cars with struts. I should just look it up in my workshop manual but I'm at work right now. I'm planning on switching out soon.

yes you would have to compress them a bit.
