I have a 2006 RRS HSE with around 105,000 miles and have been getting a "suspension fault" amber warning light every once in a while. It will stay on for a few seconds, then turn off. After reading some postings on this site, it appears that I may be due for a new compressor. My mechanic estimates the cost at around $1,200. Does that seem reasonable? Any other thoughts on a potential solution?

Check for loose or worn wiring to the compressor. I had a similar problem and found the wire was rubbed under the spare tire in my '08 RR S/C. Your situation is a little different but the symptoms are the same.
