Wouldn't ask this for any other car, but with all the computers and intricacies of the LR3...

Can we purchase tires anywhere and have them installed or does this have to be done by a LR dealer?

Two reasons, first, I was wondering if any computer systems have to be reset/calibrated/whatever when the tires are changed.

Second, I remember hearing that with the Discoverys they used to have issues up on the lift when the suspension would fully extend and could ruin the air shocks. (dealer told me this when touting the redesigned air suspension on the LR3s) Anyway, I'd rather not pay the premium to get new tires at LR if I can help it.

Thanks,
-todd

I had tires changed to new wheels at the local Discount Tire with no problem whatsoever. The LR3 has to be jacked up higher due to the shocks. If you think about it, if there was any problem with the shocks in changing tires, you couldn't install a spare yourself when you have a flat tire. You are safe IMO.

Unless you change the size of the tire, I see no need for adjustments or the car's computer to get involve. As for the jacking up, the dealer is probably just BSing you. Never heard of such a thing.

You can have anyone you like install tires for you. Be sure that they use the proper tools and values for torquing the wheels down. Air Gun set on "****" is not acceptable. If you stay with the same size everything will be fine. If you change sizes, you can throw the speedometer off to a very small degree, and the car cannot be reset for it.
As for the suspension lifting deal, It was the 4.0-4.6 P38 Range Rovers (1995-2002) that had this happen. They came factgory equipped with a different design air suspension that would unseat the bag body from the cylinder if the car was lifted and the suspension allowed to hang. That is one of the reasons your dealer has all of those drive-on lifts.

Thanks.

Do I need the alignment done with the new tires or will a proper alighment on my worn tires also carry over to a new set?

Just preparing for my service visit this week. If my dealer won't pro-rate the tires there is no need to pay a premium and buy them at the delaership. But if they are going to tell me that its better to do the allignment with new tires, I'll get the new tires put on and then take it in for the allignment....
