With 10K miles on our 2008 HSE I have the same dilema. Living outside Boston the OE Goodyears might make it through winter but I think I will need a better tire for ski trips to VT. Looking at the Nokian website, I think they stopped making the HSE size. (255/55/19) We had Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow winter tires on our Q7 and they were very good. Not a really agressive winter tire, but very quiet with excellent ice & slush traction. I'm also looking at the Pirelli Scorpion ATR from Tire Rack which may work well year-round. BTW, wozzer, I also grew up in Buffalo but having lived here 25 years, I'm now a fan of America's most hated team...the Patriots.

Scorpion Ice and Snow

FWIW...I have an '06 LR3 SE, live in CO (south of Denver but 1500 feet higher), and put on the Scorpion Ice and Snow last year...

Had numerous snowy/icy drives, a couple of 10+ inch storms, and general nastiness...

It goes without saying but the Scorpions just reinforced how lousy the GYrs are. I left them on just for the winter (and unfortunately put the GYrs back on) but was very very pleased. Never had a traction issue (other than some momentary stupid moves), good mileage/wear, and low noise (compared to the GYrs). Note that I generally would use snow/grass/gravel mode just to help keep the milder throttle curve.

I'm getting ready to throw them back on here in a month or so. My plan for the spring is to put the Scorpion ATRs on as my "summer" tire. I want something with a bit more traction for mild off-road use (I have the 18's so the MTRs aren't an option at this point).

Let us know what you do and how it all works out...

Blizzak Option

So based on comments here i am looking at the Nokians for about $300. I called my local tire guy and he tells me that he could put a Blizzak 255/50/19, rather than the 255/55/19. He said it's 1/4" narrower and i won't notice. Any thought on this new choice? I do like Blizzak's from past experience. They are slightly more $346, but i want a good tire.

Love to hear your thoughts.

Obviously, you will accumulate a wee bit more miles on the odo than actual.....

But, more importantly, I could not find a Blizzak in 255/50-19 with a LI >107; which is quite a bit lower than what LR specifies for the LR3. Ask your tire guy if he is aware of this and still comfortable with his recommendation.
