I found a nicely priced LR4 w/ 42K mi, and almost jumped in thinking I’d sell my 90k mi LR3, but realized I’m not gonna get much for it. Is the LR4 worth another $23K to me? Thoughts?

I am not sure it's an "upgrade." I suppose it depends on your priorities. The LR3 is more rugged and the engine is bullet-proof. Since you're asking...I'd say keep the LR3 and use the $23k to keep it in tip top shape...maybe add some fun accessories to freshen it up.

I do the same thing all the time, I see a great LR4 and then I think, is it worth $x.xx to fundamentally drive the same thing? It's hard to justify when everything is working well.

When things break, then I get in the LR4 mood again, but I know I still have to fix the LR3 to sell it. Then once it is fixed, I think jeez, I just put all of this money into it that I will never get out, I better drive it for a while first, and then the cycle continues...

Go drive the LR4 and see if you like it. That will help provide clarity.

Curious how the LR3 is more "rugged"?

I agree with Houm, keep the LR3. I've thought the same thing certain times but for all I've done to my 3 and know it's a solid truck I can't see spending money for a LR4. Now that I've seen the new Defender my plan is to check them out when they hit the dealers and hopefully replace my Touareg with the D.

I know this feeling. I have a 4 and started looking at the defender. Ended up saying I like my 4 and keeping it in action with the money that would have otherwise gone to upgrade tech.
If you like your 3 keep it. The 4 is quicker thanks to the 5.0 but even that has issues. Go read up in the forum about the years and packages before you jump for a used 4.
Lots of 4 owners look back at the 3 more fondly. Personally I’ve considered picking up a 3 as a daily to keep the miles off the 4.

I own a 06’ LR3 and 11’LR4 it’s like red apples to green apples.
The 3, slow and reliable but has the rugged feel like hell yes we can and the electronics are a little dated.
The 4, fast and nimble, softer smoother ride and updated electronics .
The curve ball is my wife’s 08’RR, it falls between both the LR3 and LR4 LoL. According to her the 3 goes anywhere and the 4 goes to the mall.

I say that because the molded plastic materials on the LR3 can take more of a beating (and still look good) as compared to the painted plastic stuff on the LR4. Some of the interior stuff, too...is more conducive to taking abuse. That's all I meant. Both are great vehicles.

I have an 06' LR3 and just bought a 13' LR4. So far the LR4 feels more premium and does feel like an upgrade. My LR3 is the SE V6 and the LR4 is the HSE w a V8 so there will a difference in engine and trim. Getting back to your question I was asking myself the same thing when looking for a 4 and thought why not just update the 3? Wife decided that she wants to use the 3 as her family vehicle to keep her lease vehicle miles low...so for now we're keeping both and I've already began to update the 3. I found the matching painted wheel arches and other exterior trim that matches the 4 look. It does feel nicer but truthfully doesn't feel as nice as the 4.
