Hi folks, Our 2013 LR4 at about 100k miles is making a funny grinding/whining noise from the back of the engine on revving and acceleration (load does not seem to change it).
You can hear it when you drive normally and accelerate at any speed. If you open the hood and pull off the plastic cover it is very evident. It's like its generally from the back end of the intake manifold. Any clue whats near there? Cam bearings? It is not coming from the timing chain and does not sound like that noise. Thanks, all!

I tried but the sound didn't come out so good and I had no one to rev the engine where it really makes the noise.
It's at the dealer now, they got it to make the noise and the tone of the rep was not good.
They are going to run it without belts on Monday to see if they can pin down the noise.
I really hope it's not "Merry Christmas! You need a new engine!"

I'm not sure I understand the "without belts" part, but the fact that they didn't immediately know what it was suggests it's something less common, I would think.

How long have you had the car? Since new? Do you know the service history?

I'm not sure I understand either but I got the "merry christmas, I would get rid of this car, it'll be $15k for a remanufactured engine plus install" They have narrowed it down to " something internal to the engone"
Damn shame. We really like this rover. Its CPO with good history, has 98k, had it since 39k, changed oil/dealer service more often than the long oil change interval.
There is a reputable independent LR shop nearby. I should probably get a second opinion.
They suspect rod knock but it goes away when warm. They basically said to trade it in warm as soon as I can.

Any advice from you guys here welcome.

Is it still under CPO?
Out of CPO in August, figures!
Have appt with independent LR guy in early Jan. Pray for us.

It really does NOT sound like a rod to me and there is no affect on performance. It sounds like a bad bearing in the top end back by the firewall that increases in bad soundingness with rpm.

The back of the engine is also the front of the transmission ..............

Promised to update you guys...
Independent shop says dealer is wrong, it's definitely not rods. They also say it's not the typical timing chain noise they hear from the 5.0's. They think maybe a timing chain guide bolt is broken. They say if it's just that and the guides, maybe $1200. If they find other top end stuff who knows, but they are confident the absolute max is $5-6k and that it does NOT need a new engine.
They also confirmed what people on here talk about but there seems to be some mysticism: LR did not "fix" the chain guide issue for the 2013's. All the 5.0's get it no matter what.
Hope this adds to the collective wisdom of this board. Will post back a post engine drop update.
