Another LR4 Saved from Coolant Death

Here’s a similar shot showing degradation of the Y-pipe in the front crossover system. Same concept - the pipe starts degrading at the portion that’s in the block. Looked like a new pipe before I pulled it off. You can see the entire flange below the o-ring was completely disconnected. This is at 52K miles.

Very disheartening to say the least. Worse than timing chain problems, IMO. At least with those things you get some of the slap-happy warning sounds. With these pipes even a super close external visual inspection reveals nothing of the rot within. Sheesh, add one more reason that LR4 owners reach for the pills every night!

I very much agree. We make a big deal about the chain problem, but other than the cost, unless you know nothing about it and don't pay attention to your car, it's unlikely to **** the engine.

The pipe situation, on the other hand, is so damn insidious.

If i have my LR4 long enough, ill be adding the water pump, front, and rear crossover to the "replace every 50k miles" maintenance. for me, that's about every 5 years and will be almost 200k on the odometer. For the estimated parts cost of $300 and a few hours of DIY, its not terrible. if one were to be paying a shop for this service, I can certainly understand the frustration.

It’s there - number 13 “outlet tube” is the vertical y-pipe portion of the front crossover. If you follow that up, you’ll see it’s connected to the horizontal portion of the pipe (not separately labeled in the drawing, but it has that signature flattened out section and little cap on it). On the scv6, these are two separate pieces that are connected. On the V8, I believe it’s just a single pipe. They are not interchangeable.

Thank you both for your guidance and thanks DaytonaR57 for the link to the other post. Given all I've been reading about this issue I'm considering changing them for preventative maintenance. I have a 2014 LR4 SCV6 with 87k miles.

Has anyone correlated the plastic failures with coolant change interval? This almost looks like the pH of the coolant could be causing issues with the plastic, due to time, not miles.

Interesting and plausible-sounding theory especially when combined with the heat theory...
