Here's a question my wife asked: If Lr4 s were still being sold new in the market, and I was in the market for a new car (60k - 80k), what would I buy? The answer was obviously, LR4 all day long. Not even a question for me, I love my 2015MY lux with HD).

That made me wonder what I'll do when I run my rig to the ground. What will I buy? Why not buy something like a 2013 with high mileage, very little rust, put in 50-60k to replace the big and important items.. (of course this assumes one has that kind of cash, not buying on loan, and can insure for that amount)... couldn't that be the solution? I've heard some say, with enough money, anything is possible. But I'm saying, not unlimited cash, but the cash one would use for a new car, could it be used and get our dream car, new?

In Las Vegas I was quoted over $500 mo for car insurance for a new Defender. Stupid prices. I haven't had an accident in 28 years, no tickets in probably over 10 years now.

You could. Eventually rust and a scarce supply of unique components would eventually squeeze you but no reason not to. If it is a second or third car they you don't rely on every day. Absolutely.

My problem is I don't want $60k-$80k sunk in transportation. I love my V8 LR4, but it cost me a fraction of that price when I bought it used a year ago. I can't imagine a brand new one would be nicer enough to justify the price difference (for me). A new car warranty would be cool. That would provide some peace of mind. But you are paying through the nose for it and the depreciation makes it a double whammy. My expectations of a $60k-$80K vehicle would make the LR4 seem a lot less great. Any problem it had, any shortcoming at all, would have me pointing to the window sticker and screaming, "THIS. SHOULD. NOT. HAPPEN!!!"

Well that's the inverse relationship. More cost may buy power, capability and sophistication but it doesn't buy reliability. Or as my grandfather used to say: Fancy car = fancy problems. For simple and reliable ? Japanese.

That being said I view my LR3&4 more as hobbies than transportation. The youngest kids are hammering away on the 3, my wife still drives the 4 but I can see the kids taking over as the 3 as it nears the end.

:). I feel you @BigBriDogGuy .
I’m a cheapskate. (That is I’m all about “value”, no matter what the cost)
@ktm525 , I have no interest in a boring Japanese, Korean or American vehicle… as many of them well, are boring.
As with all my vehicles, I’m driving them until the wheels fall off. Of course the trouble is, I keep them so well maintained, the odds are against me that this will ever happen, lol.

College son drives the LR4 [v8 hse lux]; it now has 106k miles. Been looking for a D5 for the wife but want a newer one with the ingenium inline 6/48volt electric boost....seems to be a unicorn here on the east coast. A number of them are available 2021 and before with the SCv6. Actually after not finding a suitable one, looking at KIA Tellurides..a lot of bells and whistles for the money and decently long powertrain warranties etc....still no match for the LRs but piece of mind for a daily driver for her and long distance traveller may win out

I'm curious to see if the the i6 has better cooling / timing components.

If you're looking at the telluride, you might want to consider the Hyundai palisade, same platform but leans posher, with rear air springs.
