It is actually near the western end of the road. I'd heard it was a bit deep this winter and some people were having to take a highway route around it

Hmm, interesting, perhaps the PCOR route I was following managed to avoid it then. There was no water at all.

Great Pics and trip Troy. We camp with our Airstream trailer group every month. Last month it was Borrego Springs. Although we camp in a trailer and pull it with a GMC diesel, we've appreciated fun off-roading for over 50 years. We too have an LR, a LR3 but never really get it off road much. It has been a great and safe vehicle for picking up grandkids at school, shopping, and just a great around town driver. I always dreamed heading off road with one of our grandsons, pulling a small trailer like a A/S Basecamp. I'm a little over tent camping from so many firefighting injuries over the years. It would be such a fun trip with two vehicles to share and for safety reasons. I see that you have all of the necessities for emergencies. Hopefully you dropped the tires down when in the sand, saw you stuck, but looks like you handled that well.
Stay safe out there. Have fun.

Thanks Gary. You have more fun off-road years than I do under your belt. Glad to hear you're still at it. I'm a big fan of making camping fun and comfortable. Suffering while traveling is over-rated. :).

Yes, I definitely aired down as needed. The tires are 80 psi E-rated. I normally run them at 50 on the highway and I travel way under my GVWR anyway. Off-road, I played with 40, 35, 30, and as low as 20 depending on what was going on terrain-wise. I was loath to go below 20 psi and didn't feel like I really needed to. I have a dual ARB Air compressor and an InDeflate 2-tire split hose. So it was easy to air up again whenever I needed it.

I hope you manage to get your LR3 out there with your grandson one day. That would be a great trip. Tip: If you're less than 6'3" you can probably sleep comfortably in the back. I did that on this trip and it was comfy and warm!

Any mods related to sleeping in the back, or did you just unload and bed down with everything folded flat.

Just curious. My self-constructed sleeping platform is at the upholsterer right now getting its finishing layer of marine grade carpet. Mine turned into a science project to get all the features I wanted. Namely, a nesting platform so I could retain the second row of seats, and a flip up panel so I could still access my fridge when the platform was in "sleeping position".

The former. I'd unload at night, set up camp, and then at bed time, inflate a big comfy mattress and go to bed. In the morning, deflate, pack up, and go. Not the most optimal thing from a time perspective but in 2 weeks and 1800 miles, I had many extremes of wind, altitude, temperatures, and even noise (Superstition Mountain OHV Park, I'm looking at you!). Normally I just tent so this was an experiment. Overall, it was a comfortable, warm, quiet experience, with the extra bonus of a good workout moving 500 pounds of water, fuel, tools, and kit in and out 2x / day.

With everything removed, you can basically sit almost straight up inside which is great.

I've looked at and considered a number of different sleeping platforms / drawer systems but I keep using the vehicle for so many different things that ultimately flexibility is the most important thing so to this day, the vehicle is empty and I just put in what is needed for any given trip.

I'd love to see photos of your setup if they exist here in the forum or where ever else you might have posted them.

Looks like you had a great time, here in the wilds of England I doubt you could go much more than 1/2 a day without bumping into someone else, if you don't mind me asking what did you pay for the 2013 discovery 4 /LR4 last year I bought a 2013 discovery 4 for £10000 around $13000 which had 225000 miles on the clock the only thing I have done is put a couple of new tyres on and new air mass sensor on it at the moment I have most of the centre console out as I am fitting a 10 inch screen to it the only thing I am having a problem with is I cannot remember what was displayed on the multi function display as the display died on it a couple of months ago and the only thing I can remember is the dab radio settings and the phone book plus Bluetooth but I am sure it displayed other things related to the car settings fitting the radio is not a problem along with keeping the steering wheel remote but I do not know anyone who has one of these to ask.

Re your decided to do the trip now or never I had a similar decision several years ago my ex had left me and I had been thinking of stopping work and going travelling, at first I had been thinking of sailing around the Mediterranean but after deciding to go I was told that it gets cold in winter in that area so decided to go to the Caribbean insted so with my ex leaving and me sat in a 4 bed 12 room house I sold my business along with the house and went across to Florida to buy a boat I got a 40 foot ketch and then spent the next 10 years sailing around the Caribbean lots of time I spent more than a month on my own on a deserted island without any other person or light in view the amount of stars you can see when off shore was a eye opener here in uk it is hard to find a place without lights which spoils the view.

Your photos are great i wish i had taken more than i did good luck with your next trip (once the travel bug bites you you will always be looking forward to when you can go again)

Regards Poppy Ann.
