Just wondering if anyone might have an idea on what might be making a 98 Disco lose power/hesitate. I just put a new fuel pump on because my wife ran it on empty and killed the old one. I also put on a new fuel filter, but it just feels like it boggs down. It does not do it everytime you drive it. It did not have any problems up until she ran empty. I have also put some dry gas in it recently. ??????

He listed the year as a '98. I would probably check the regular maintenance items, ie spark plugs and wires, air filter. While your at it, change the diff fluid and t-case fluid. You may also have some carbon buildup in the engine. I've been doing the Seafoam thing now and I have noticed a difference. Not dramatic but its running smoother.

It is a 98 Discovery with 85k, I just put plugs and wires on over the summer, this did not start happening until the fuel pump went bad and was replaced. It is so wierd, because it runs great and all of a sudden it just boggs down for a few seconds. It might only do it once out of every 3 drives.

Do you get any check engine light when this happens?

No check engine light comes on and other than this little annoyance the vehicle is in great condition with regular maintenance.

Replace the Fuel pump fuse/relay even if it looks good. I had the same symptoms on my BMW after doing the same running on empty and killing the pump.

Try it. Fuses are not expensive. I don't remember where this fuse is on the Rover but I can look it up tonight.

Have you checked the replaced fuel filter? It seems to me that when you ran it out of fuel you also picked up a little crud from the bottom of the fuel tank some of it could still be lurking in the lines. Did you run any of the fuel out before installing the new filter? If not, it might be slightly blocked, which could explain the intermittent surging you are experiencing.

I never thought of replacing the fuse for the pump, but I will give it a try. I did replace the filter when I did the fuel pump. Thanks...

If it is hesitating around 50+ mph, then it is a good chance that it is your VSS. When the Vehicle Speed Sensor starts to go bad, it will tell the ECU to basically shut the engine down. To keep from overspeeding the vehicle.

The VSS is sending a higher than acurate speed to the ECU.

It will only do this in 4th gear. When it happens drop gear to 3rd and see if the issue stops. If it does, it is the VSS. The vehicle knows that it can't run that fast in 3rd gear, so it will overide the info from the VSS.

Hope this helps,
