Not sure who is saying that, but cleaning any MAF sensor is not going to hurt it. Now the odds of the MAF sensor already being beyond cleaning is a possibility. But at least for you if you have to replace it the MAF for a D2 is less than half the cost of a D1 MAF Sensor.
As far as the codes, this could either be the Passenger front O2 sensor or the MAF is either still dirty or needs replaced.
