Hi Really Need Someone To Point Me In The Right Direction As I Love My Disco And Don't Want To Part With It - But Lately It's Testing My Patience!!

Whats Happening Is When Running On Lpg Every 50 Miles Or So The Car Backfires And Blows The Air Filter Box Lid Off!! Goes With A Right Bang Too...

So When I Switch To Running On Petrol It Stops Backfiring But Once Or Twice A Day When Pulling Up To A Junction Decides To Idol At Around 100-200 Rpm Before Stalling - Usually Restarts Okay?? Annoying Though.

To Try And Solve These Problems I Have Done The Following - Changed All Plugs And Leads To Genuine Lr Parts, Had The Gas System Fully Cleaned & Serviced (single Point)

I'm Really Looking For You Guys Who May Have Come Across This Before To Give Me A Little Help Before I Start Guessing And Buying Un-neccesary Bits. It Has Been Suggested That The Air Mass Flow Sensor Could Be Damaged? Possible??

Also Around The Start Of This Problem Loads Of Horse Hair Type Material Was Hanging Out Of The Exhaust - Could There Be A Blockage In There Causing Back Pressure??

Any Suggestions Would Be Much Appreciated - Andy

Horse hair in the exhaust... sounds like someone has stuffed your pipe with something. After backfiring/blowing off the air cleaner lid, there is a good chance you may have some issues with the MAF. Before I read the Horse hair part I was going to say maybe the cam is getting worn out or even the Valves may be having issues, but not sure now.

thanks - sounds like the MAF is favorite to be faulty - especially as they dont sound too robust and it's been backfired on about a dozen times!!

As for the horses hair type stuff - this is the material used in the baffle parts of the back 2 sections of the exhaust to deaden the noise - just wondered if the baffle has collapsed whether the back pressure is coming from there - or is that wishful thinking??

thanks - andy

Acually when you say that, it is very possible that if the material has clogged the pipe that this could cause your issues.
