Hi all. First time Land Rover owner and Newbie to this forum (long time reader, first time post!). Hoping for insight from you all. I have a 2012 LR4 HSE which is still under warranty (CPO). Since I purchased the truck 6 months ago, while driving at night the headlights will briefly dim (for a second). It keeps doing this seemingly every 10 min. I took it into the LR dealer and they ran a bunch of tests couldn't find the issue but updated the computer and checked the electrical systems and sent me on my way. STILL had the issue! I brought it back and this time they went through the whole truck, found no issues, no fault codes and had a "specialist" look at it. They decided to check all the grounding on the wires on the truck and then sent me home. Same flickering/dimming issue. I am at a loss what this issue could be. I am sick of bringing it in. I am not being charged due to the CPO but what a waste of time. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help.

Does it happen with both headlights or just one? Do you have halogen or HID (Xenon) lights?
It sounds like a wiring issue to me; perhaps a poor connection.

I should also clarify they dim briefly uniformly and return to full intensity. It literally dims a half second. I had an older car that did that whenever the AC engaged. Same effect. Thx for ur help

Dimming of halogen bulbs is a known issue; I believe it's been discussed on the forums before. It occurs in the winter months because it's tied to operation of the front and rear window defrosters, which turn on automatically when you start the car in cold weather. What I have read is that it takes the vehicle a second or two to notice the increased drain on the electrical system in certain situations (such as when you are stopped at an intersection) before it implements changes to accommodate.

See if your lights still dim with both the front and rear window defrosters turned off.

The xenon lights probably do not experience this issue because of the ballast, which essentially acts as an electrical capacitor in this regard.

So if ryanjl is correct (and I have no reason to doubt him) then the solution would be to install a relay wiring harness for the lights so that power is drawn directly from the battery. I would push LR on this though because it's their problem, not yours....

I have a 2010 and they do that even with the front and rear windshield defrost off, I started to notice it as it got colder. It seems to happen when the a/c system for the auto temp kicks on.

Thanks for all the replies! This does still occur when my front and rear defog is on. So either go the relay harness to the batt or install xenon lights? Xenon like a DDM Tuning HID kit which I have seen on these forums?

If you are wanting an honest answer, here are two:

I would not want to try to make a relay system for the lights in the LR4. It would be very complex. If you hired it out, it would be very expensive.

I, personally, would also stay away from any aftermarket HID system. The halogen lights are designed for a halogen bulb, and putting HID lights (which emit a different kind of arc) would be like trying to see better by putting on someone else's glasses.

The solution is probably either to live with it or to find some used, factory HID housings (with the ballasts still attached) and replace your halogen housings with those. You can find them on eBay for around $300 each; maybe they will cut you a deal for buying two. I imagine that would be cheaper than paying someone to make you a relay, and you'll have better lights when it's said and done.
