Yellow Brake Light

Well.. I am at 32K at the yellow "Brake" light came on. The "I" console so graciously tells me to check my brake pads every time I release the brake pedal (like i am gonna stop the car, jump out, take the wheel off, dismantle the caliper and check the pad on the side of the road.. there must be some brit humor in there somewhere)...

anyway.. 2 questions:
1) how many people have had to replace the rotors at ~35K v. how many peeps have gotten away with just the pads

2) anyone DIY on the pads / rotors? if so, is it hard, easy? or somewhere in between for a noob?
