... Because it has an element of truth.

Face it, owning one of these rigs out of warranty is an iffy proposition for someone who is not mechanically inclined. There are all kinds of rabbit holes these trucks can lead you down for thousands of dollars for an individual whose idea of auto service is to toss the keys to a service writer and say fix it.

The dealership discussion is a whole separate topic. I am not anti-dealer, per se. I basically grew up in a small town GM dealership where my Dad worked for 40+ years. That said, though, with very few exceptions, I am strongly of the opinion that an out of warranty Rover should never visit a dealership. A $2,000 brake job will cure most people of that Rikky-tik.

Having a modicum of vehicle/mechanical know-how goes a long damn way when owning a Rover out of warranty.

That said, taking it to Auto Zone is a good, free first step to getting some specific codes if you don't have your own scan tool. Take those codes, run them through google, here, etc. The key word there is "free." I doubt the dealer would even let you wave at the service department for free.

A generic obd2 code reader is like $15. Why autozone at all?

Free is free.

Auto Zone is now; code reader is 1 or 2 days from now.

I agree, a code reader is a must. Really, the gap tool is a must (or maybe the iLand).

But, if I hadn't sprung for any of those yet, I might try Auto Zone first.

Additionally, I've found that some of the cheaper code readers don't clear codes. I've got a stupid airbag light on my wife's Volvo (long story) that my $20 code reader and phone app won't clear.

How old is the Volvo? At one point Volvo was recommending replacing all airbags at 8 years. They soon realized what a mistake that was to new car sales. They pulled the sticker that said so at a "free" service.

It's an 09 C30R. Seats were removed to dry out the carpets after the sunroof drains clogged, and the guy who did that work (he charged less than I value my time) evidently turned the ignition on sometime when the seats were out. This triggered the airbag lights, and they don't automatically go off once everything is hooked back up.

I thought it was no big deal and I'd just clear them myself (guy was an auto detailer and doesn't have a scan tool), but I think my scan tool just looks at engine codes and not airbag/body ones. The airbag codes don't even show up on it.

"If Its Free, Its For Me" Famous saying a the Ford dealer where I worked at for a very short time... Customer would come in for their Free oil changes, Ford Techs where required to do a FREE vehicle inspections. Customer would not want to pay for any required service. Here's where the quote started.
How do you know a good Dealership from a bad one?
1. Quality of friendly courteous personnel employed. How they answer the phone, and how long you have to wait.
2. High rotation of personnel show poor Leadership or lack of moral. Its always starts at the top. The owner.
3. Next time you visit your dealer. Look around. Do you see happy or miserable personnel?

Did you know that generic scanner can cause more codes or corrupt software in your powertrain module?
You heard it here. Talk with your knowledgeable Tech and see if he agrees with me.
I have run it this problem when someone tries to clear codes with generic scanner on Range Rover.
