Good news.
I got some new Micro USB cables in the mail and on the first try, it worked just fine. I'm not an Andriod user so I don't use Micro USB cables on a regular basis. I only have cables which came with different accessories like my headphones, mice, keyboards, etc.

If I had to guess, there is a difference between Micro USB cables (Charge only vs. Charge and data communication). This device might require a high data rate.

I'm asking GAP for the USB cable recommendation so I can post it here.

In the meantime, I used these cables which are rated at 480MBPS for data transfer. I chose these since the data rate is mentioned (so it's not just for charging?) and I was able to get these the next day in my area: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JPDTZXK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Explains the 'Sale' price? lol. It has shipped, so we'll see
haha You should be fine. I checked and they program the devices through the USB port in production. So every device is somewhat tested for USB communication before shipping! :)

I never used to believe that cables could “go bad” but it’s happened enough times that I start suspecting them if basic methods don’t fix an issue. Good luck.
Agreed. I think in this case was a bit more than just good or bad. I suspect that it has to do with the quality and data rating. I could be wrong.

So! Don't make my mistake. The tool comes with a cable. Use their cable. Don't use a third party cable. To be honest, in the nice black packaging, I did not even see it (see the pictures below).

I can confirm your findings. I took a random micro usb cable out of my drawer and plugged my IID into my computer. The GAP software didn't recognize it. I then used the "hidden" supplied cable from the box and it worked. I never knew about charge vs data cables as I don't use them often either.

In their defence.....

2.5.1 Steps for updating the IIDTool
1- Connect the tool to the USB port of the computer using the supplied USB cable

But the good news is you managed to get everything working. So that’s a result.

When I read the instruction, I assumed that they’re not providing the cable anymore and the instruction is not updated. I should have paid more attention to the unboxing.

I made the same mistake thinking back. There was some swearing at the stupid computer for a few minutes then I found the cable in the box.
