Trying to avoid buying new sensors for upcoming brake pad change. Does the sensor trigger when it first contacts the disc or does it trigger when worn through?

Embedded in the plastic is a copper loop that when worn through / broken, creates an open circuit. If your amber brake light has comes on, you've worn through and need to replace the sensor.

Keep in mind there are only sensors on the left sides, front and back.

These sensors have worked great for me.

Front

Rear

Some guys permanently splice the connection and forego the sensor re-installation. For me, they are cheap insurance and a nice tool for reminder.

I believe it triggers when worn through. If I remember correctly, the sensor is covered by some black rubber, which will quickly wear away when it comes into contact with the rotor. Many reuse sensors if they have not been triggered.

It trips as soon as the black rubber coating on the sensor is stripped away and that first strand of copper wire is broken. So no it doesn't need to we worn all the way through before it trips. It trips as soon as the first speck of wiring is exposed.

I have changed my front brakes 2 times without replacing the sensor, but had to replace the rear sensor cause it broke while i was removing it. So remove the sensor carefully and you can surely reuse them as long as the warning light has never showed on your dash.

In general I avoid URO parts like the plague... they are the Yugo of aftermarket part suppliers. Google for stories about their kwality.

The OEM Bowa sensors are available for a few bucks more, worth the cost IMO:

I didn't even know URO made these! For a list of good/bad/ugly manufacturers, click here. While the list is aimed at Mercedes parts, some of the brand names are available for JLR as well - especially the stuff down in the "never buy" section.

I accidentally broke the front sensor and it was a gigantic PITA to replace it. Had to remove the wheel liner (or at least flex move it enough) - that was the worst part.

For dealing with sensors and getting the light to turn off, OR trying to bypass the sensors by not using them, heres a video I made recently on a 2011 LR which will help you understand

Resetting the Brake Warning Light

Subscribe if it helped
