I wasn't aware the 8 speed was available anywhere for the v8. But that would be nice.

Alex, except for an incident involving someones college girlfriend, its been a while since i have been envious of something in Panama! ...well, maybe not that long, I have been wanting to dive Islas de las Perlas for a while...

I thought I had heard that the US and EU emissions were going to be synched in the near future (a quick google search came up empty)...and that would obviously open up opportunities for the diesel....its funny, if you play around with the global LR website, you can see that most countries don't even allow you to get a LR4/D4 in v8...

This hope of a diesel coming out in a few years is the reason I am seriously thinking of leasing a lr4...although how that will equate to off roading...and my emotional need for a rear locker is a bit contradictory....I just replaced the fuel pump on my 1997 D1 so I guess i still have a car for when it gets rough...

Been a while since i posted anything, but have been reading, enjoying, and benefiting from the threads for sometime now as the day of taking the delivery of my new LR4 approaches (custom order, lux, HD, vision assist, sirius, & RSE.)

Dealer opted for no deposit at the time of order mentioning no obligations, and no price was set either. I havent brought it up yet to the dealer but may want to trade in my 2006 LR3 HSE (with relatively less miles) if offered good value, but not sure how to bring it up without being taken advantage of (to their credit, dealer seems very nice and honest person, i am just being protective). Any advice from the experienced ones would be greatly appreciated. Also, does it help in negotiating (or even matter) if you buy it right out without financing? Many thanks.

I brought all my scuba diving gear with me to Panama but haven't gone on a dive in 5 years. I even have a new regulator and wet suit that I bought to start diving again and never got to use

I shudder to think what they would do to me if i tried to park my car on the beach in California like you did...ok, another thing to envy about panama..you even get the right name on the car...none of this lr4 nonsense...as a 15 year owner of a D1, I am insulted that they felt the need to rename the car in NA because of reliability issues. Not saying they were wrong, just insulted... :big grin:

I am in CA too and I think the closest place I can drive on the beach is Pismo Beach? I'm not even sure. Around here (SF Bay area) they would crap a hippy brick. I am in complete agreement, as I think they should keep the badging universal - Discovery 4. I did hear that LR is ending this trend and will merge the US names with global (appropriate) names in the next couple years. Not sure where I read it, but I hope so.

I am in the same position as you, which is why I leased my LR4. I do not usually do that, but I have not had a LR since 2000 and my Discovery was a piece of absolute junk. Seriously, the worst car ever. But, when the LR4 came out I really loved it and always had a liking to LRs. So, I said I would initially lease it and then buy it if I was really impressed. I have about 1.5 years left on the lease, which gives me time to figure out if I want to keep it or trade it in depending on the next model. If the diesel comes to the states, I'm buying in a heartbeat. But, at this point, I am pretty sure I am buying my LR4.

As for leasing and off-roading, you can certainly have some fun, just don't go too crazy - which honestly, you would not do anyway in a new LR4.

Agreed, but if you lease, that could cause you to pause on getting a lot of vehicle mods (skid plates, those 18 inch wheels we **** after, the D4 nameplate we would steal from Alex's vehicle, etc) if you plan to return the truck.

Although, i wonder if i could have them add a few of those things to the lease purchase? (obviously not the wheels, but maybe the ladder). When I looked at the numbers, not including taxes or licenses (very rough) for a 55,475 msrp car with a bit of market adjustment:

Lease: 3k down, 39 x 700 in payments, 28292 buyout.
Purchase: 15k down, 60 x 700 in payments, no buyout.

What is interesting is looking at where you would be at 39 month and 60 months.

For the lease, 30,300 in total payments (including down payment)+ 28k buyout = 58,592.

For the purchase at 39 months, 42k in total payments (including down payment) + 14k in additional payments left = 56,700 (at 2.9% rate).

So, if you lease, at 39 months, you are pretty much at the same number as a purchase, if you discount the extra 12k you put down. But, putting that extra 12k down, saves you about 2k + any cost to finance the lease buyout. I have to believe this would be mitigated a bit by LR lowering the buyout a little.

If you are pretty sure you want to buy it out, don't lease. If you don't mind an additional few k in charges to give you flexibility on the chance you might buy it, not a bad option. If Diesel really is the utopian solution I naively hope it will be, that might cause the truck to depreciate more than the lease currently values it at...in a way, leasing protects you by giving you a firm resale value in that you are locking in the depreciation already....

Please give feedback if I have put my foot in my mouth somewhere....I am married, so I am used to being told I don't know what I am talking about....obviously taxes, licensing and different interest rates can change everything...

Thanks for the thorough response - that was exactly what I was thinking and I went ahead and leased the LR4 (my first time back with LR in over 10 years). For me, it's worth the additional few thousand in charges, as I want to be able to hand it in if needed. The longer I have the truck the more I love it! This will help me decide if I want to pull the trigger at lease end or just buy a new vehicle once the lease is over (especially if the diesel comes to the US).

You are correct though, you would not want to go crazy with accessories if you plan to turn the truck back in at lease end. Thus, I have only put about $3,000 into accessories and will stop at that point. I have the ladder, Voyager half-rack, front skid plate, slider/steps, and the brush guard covers for the head and tail lights. I spoke to two dealerships before doing this, as I wanted to get an idea of what it meant at lease end (if I go that route). They told me that they welcome accessories (as long as it's not crazy) because they can negotiate more when you get the next vehicle. For me, if I turn the truck back in, then it's worth the money for enjoyment, utility, and off-road protection. I may even sell the truck outright and pay off the lease, as I can certainly get a lot more than what I owe at lease-end.

If I end up keeping the truck, then I would go for the winch, 18" wheels, spare tire carrier, etc. For now, I am happy with my accessories until I make a decision. Plus, if I do turn in the truck, the dealer said they would negotiate for a few accessories on the new truck or help relocate my existing if it's the same fit (i.e., another LR4/Discovery 4).

So, it's all up to you, and I do not usually advocate for leasing, but for ME and my situation it works out great! I wanted and needed my options open. I hope that sort of gives you some perspective on my situation, as it sounds like you have the same thoughts.
